AI for Logistics
How logistics, transport and freight operators deploy AI to handle pickup calls, track and trace updates, dispatch coordination and the back office work that drains margin.
Why this hub exists
Logistics is an enquiry heavy, status update heavy, exception heavy business. Shippers ask for tracking updates that already exist in the operating system. Receivers ask to reschedule appointments. Customer service teams answer a steady stream of identical questions while the high value exceptions wait. Automation helps by handling the routine enquiries in seconds and surfacing only the real exceptions to the team.
The guides in this hub cover the jobs automation is used for in logistics. AI for Logistics Companies and the AI Employee for Logistics guide give the broad picture. AI Voice Agent for Logistics and AI Customer Service for Logistics discuss the inbound queues, including voice technology in general terms. Logistics Customer Service Automation covers the workflow patterns that knit enquiry channels and operating systems together. Transport Office Automation and Shipper Back Office Automation cover the dispatch and shipper side jobs.
Most logistics operators reading these guides share the same pressure points: repetitive status and quote enquiries, incomplete enquiry data, a portal customers do not use, and an out of hours window with no cover. Automation is used to take the routine layer off the team so people can spend their time on the exceptions that need judgement. How much it removes depends entirely on your enquiry mix, so treat any percentage you read elsewhere as a claim to test against your own numbers.
If you operate trucks, brokerage or freight forwarding, start with AI for Logistics Companies for the broad picture. The Customer Service guides cover queue automation patterns, and the Transport Office and Shipper Back Office guides cover the dispatch and shipper side workflows. The logistics blog covers general field notes on the topic.
Important scope note. These guides are educational and describe how automation and AI can be applied in logistics generally. They are not a description of Boafo Agent's shipped feature set. Boafo Agent today is a website based AI enquiry and workflow agent: it answers website questions, qualifies and captures enquiries, collects structured information, routes enquiries, supports configured appointment booking, and delivers through email, Google Calendar, Google Sheets and configured webhooks. Telephone answering, inbound and outbound voice, SMS, WhatsApp, autonomous dispatch, direct TMS access and automatic shipment tracking are not live standard capabilities. Connections to TMS or visibility platforms such as MercuryGate, McLeod, TMW, Samsara, Project44 or FourKites could only be built as a custom configured API or webhook workflow, and are not shipped integrations.
There is also a commercial scorecard angle. Many shippers publish carrier scorecards covering first response time, update cadence and exception escalation time, and lane awards are influenced by those scores. Faster, more consistent first responses are one lever an operator can pull, and automation is one way to pull it. No specific scorecard movement, lane retention or financial outcome can be promised, and any business case should be modelled on your own volumes.
The other angle often discussed is driver and staff retention. Friction with the back office, long waits for answers and slow paperwork are commonly cited sources of frustration in transport operations. Reducing that friction is a plausible benefit of automating routine information handling. We do not publish retention or turnover figures of our own, and any industry figure you use should come with a named source and year.
The implementation pattern that tends to work is staged. Start with the most predictable enquiry type, get the team comfortable with the answers, then widen the scope. Add anything that depends on live operational data only once you have a real, configured integration in place, because without it an automated answer is a guess.
Teams that try to automate every queue at once usually stall early, because the volume of new cases outruns the tuning. A staged rollout gives you the chance to review real conversations weekly and correct the answers before scope grows.
A pattern discussed widely in the industry is the cross queue handoff: an enquiry is answered, an exception is identified mid conversation, a ticket is opened in the operating system and the right person is notified with full context. Boafo Agent today can handle the enquiry, identify that it needs a person, and hand it over by email, Sheet or webhook with the conversation attached. Anything that writes into a transport management system or messages a driver would need a custom configured workflow and is not part of the standard product.

Automation in logistics clusters around three areas: inbound enquiries for status and quote requests, customer service handling for routine questions and exceptions, and back office admin for dispatch and shipper teams. Boafo Agent works on the website enquiry side of that picture today.
These guides pair well with the AI Call Answering Guides hub for general background on voice technology and the AI ROI Resources hub for modelling your own business case.
Why this matters
Logistics margins are thin and recruiting and keeping office staff is hard. Repetitive enquiry handling is a large part of what burns those people out. Automating the routine layer lets the same team spend more of the day on work that needs their experience.
Shipper expectations have also shifted. Fast first responses and clear status communication now influence how carriers are scored and which lanes they keep. Automation is one way to make first responses faster and more consistent, without a promise of a specific score or lane outcome.
There is also a data benefit. Every automated conversation becomes a structured record of what customers asked and what was missing from the enquiry, which is useful for reporting and process fixes. With Boafo Agent that record arrives by email, in a Google Sheet or through a configured webhook.
Best practices
What we recommend across every deployment in this category.
Start with your most repetitive enquiry type
Status and quote enquiries are usually the highest volume and lowest variance. Automate that first so the team gets comfortable with the answers before you widen the scope.
Scope any operating system connection early
Referencing real shipment data means a connection to your transport management system, and that would have to be built as a custom configured API or webhook workflow. Boafo Agent has no native MercuryGate, McLeod or TMW integration, so scope this before you assume it.
Define exception triggers up front
Decide which call types always escalate to a human. Common triggers include detention, late delivery, damage claims and any call where the shipper asks for a manager.
Set expectations rather than promising updates you cannot send
Proactive messaging to drivers and customers is a common goal, and SMS and WhatsApp are not live Boafo Agent capabilities. Until a channel actually exists, the agent should tell the customer clearly what happens next and who will contact them.
Cover the out of hours window
Enquiries and problems do not stop when the office closes. Answering website enquiries in that window means the team starts the day with a qualified list rather than an unknown backlog.
Tier the escalation by lane value
Not every enquiry deserves the same SLA. Tier the escalation rules by lane value, customer tier or shipment risk. High value lanes get a 5 minute escalation SLA, the rest get standard.
Train the AI on your service bulletins
Every operator has a folder of service bulletins, lane notes and customer specific rules. Load that into the AI knowledge base on day one so the answers reflect your operation, not generic logistics.
Review the exception log weekly
The exceptions the AI escalates are the highest signal data you have on what is going wrong in the operation. Review the exception log every week and feed the fixes back into both the AI and the human team.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for brokerage as well as asset based carriers?
Yes for the enquiry side. Both take repetitive status and quote enquiries through their website, and both can qualify and route them. Outbound check calls to carriers are not something Boafo Agent does today.
What TMS systems does it integrate with?
None natively. Boafo Agent's live integrations are Google Calendar, Google Sheets, email and configured webhooks. A connection to a TMS such as MercuryGate, McLeod, TMW, Aljex, Tailwind or Rose Rocket could only be built as a custom configured API or webhook workflow, and no such integration ships with the product.
Can it handle enquiries in other languages?
The website agent can hold conversations in languages beyond English, and the exact scope is agreed during onboarding. Spoken language detection on telephone calls is not applicable, because voice answering is not a live capability.
Can it dispatch loads autonomously?
No. The AI can support status updates and enquiry handling on your website. Dispatch decisions route to a human dispatcher with full context.
What does it cost?
See /pricing for current plans and onboarding fees.
How is it priced for high volume?
See /pricing for current plans. Enterprise pricing is custom.
Does it work for international freight?
Yes for enquiry handling. It can answer questions and take structured enquiries from overseas clients and partners at any hour, and route them to the right desk. It does not retrieve customs or shipment status from any system.
Can people use it from a mobile?
Yes. The website agent works on a phone browser with nothing to install. It is not available through a telephone line or a yard radio, because voice channels are not live.
What about Hours of Service or compliance questions?
The agent does not give compliance advice. Those enquiries are routed to a person with the conversation attached.
